The purpose behind " Celebrate Sanibel " is to commemorate the Island''s past , showcase the p resent , and envision the future . The concept of gathering islanders together in a time of positive reflection and celebration originated last spring when Porter Goss spoke at the Committee of the Islands ( COTI ) annual meeting . Representatives of COTI , the Sanibel Library , and Sanibel Historical Museum and Village spearheaded t he concept and selected the week of November 2 which marks the anniversary date of the incorporation of Sanibel . The group grew to include representatives from service clubs , cultural organizations , city government , museums , the Community Center , the busin ess community and Chamber of Commerce .
